Port Align will help address the problem of missed access of non-coring (huber needle) chest port insertions.
Infection, leakage into the tissue are common problems. Increased cost associated with using more supplies with each re-insertion is also a problem.
Prepare the area: Maintain a sterile field and ensure the skin is dry. Cleanse the site with a skin cleanser like ChloraPrep, but allow it to dry completely before applying a dressing.
Immobilize the port: Use your non-dominant hand to locate and stabilize the port.
Insert the needle: Hold the needle perpendicular to the septum and insert it firmly at a 90 degree angle until it hits the back of the port.
Check for blood return: Gently pull back on the syringe's plunger to see if blood appears in the tubing. If blood returns, the needle is correctly placed.
Flush the port: Push saline into the port to flush it. The saline should flow in easily and shouldn't be painful.
5. Clamp: Remove the syringe and clamp the tubing.
